Empower Youth Summit, 23-24 February 2019, Broken Bay Sport & Rec

Our Empower Youth Summit will create a space for youth-led discussions of key issues and solutions.

Youth empowerment is our key priority for Barang Regional Alliance: Our region boasts one of the fastest growing Aboriginal populations in Australia. Between 2006 and 2011, the Aboriginal population grew by 56%, with a further 13% increase in 2016. Today, 55% of Aboriginal people in the Central Coast are under 24 years, with a median age of 21, while the comparative median age for non-Indigenous people is 42. This means Aboriginal youth are the next generation of leaders facing unique challenges and opportunities

Our goal for the Empower Youth Summit is to improve support for Aboriginal youth in the Central Coast through culture and leadership. We will provide a culturally safe two-day event for 150 Aboriginal youth to develop understanding of the complexities and pathways to improve outcomes and wellbeing in the region.

Aims: To deliver youth-led discussion and activities so Aboriginal youth can consider their collective future direction. Our youth’s ideas will inform the development of Barang’s three-year Youth Plan for Aboriginal people on the Central Coast.

Objectives:

  1. Launch ‘youth’ as Barang’s priority;
  2. Provide a platform for Aboriginal youth in the Central Coast to have their voices heard on the issues they care about; and
  3. Inform the content and recommendations of our three-year Youth Plan.
